I’m currently trying to do this thing called “eating healthier” – partly because there’s no denying that swimsuit season is right around the corner, and partly because it really does make me feel better about myself – but man! The biggest struggle isn’t even about avoiding certain foods as much as it’s about getting creative with your options. It’s easy to overlook, but sometimes small shifts in perspective can make a huge difference in what you crave and how satisfied it makes you feel. Case in point: am I the kind of person who regularly snacks on nuts? Absolutely not. BUT, I officially have a new go-to pistachio snack that I actually find insanely good.

I think there’s a couple tricks to this whole perspective thing: 1) Figure out what flavors you’re actually craving, 2) Incorporate them into something you can feel good about eating, and 3) Just listen to your body! Here’s what that means in this case…
My answer to #1: Dark chocolate – any time and all the time. Add that to a few other healthy mix-ins for snacking (freeze-dried strawberries and raspberries), plus a good staple snack as the base (pistachios), and you have something to munch on that can satisfy your cravings AND your hunger. But the key element is #3: listen to your body so you know when you’re full. That’s where “fool yourself full” comes in – it’s all about little tricks that make you feel full, which is why pistachios are literally the perfect healthy snacking item. Not only are they one of the lowest calorie snack nuts (and loaded with protein and fiber), they’re awesome for snacking when they’re in-shell; the shells naturally give you a visual cue of how much you’ve eaten and send signals to your brain that help prevent you from eating more than you really need to be satisfied.
Annnnnd this is the part where I get all nerdy on you because I find it really interesting; studies have shown that people who snacked on in-shell pistachios consumed almost half the amount of calories as people who ate shelled pistachios. (Like what?!! But it’s true!) Better yet, if you keep the shells on your table all day, you’re less likely to go for more later. Less mindless eating = less unnecessary calories = healthier living. PLUS, you can’t possibly go wrong with rich dark chocolate, sweet & tart freeze dried fruit, and crunchy salted pistachios. I swear… that combo? Total winner.

PS. A few other tricks for healthy snacking: use smaller plates and bowls, buy smaller portions, and eat in calm surroundings so you’re naturally inclined to slow down and savor every bite. (I can say with experience that these really do work!)
