Tropical Rum Punch

Tropical Rum Punch - An extra-tropical take on a fruity summer sipper. |

Be honest with me here – is “Tropical” Rum Punch kinda a dumb name? Are you sitting there thinking, “DUH Alex, all rum punch is tropical”? Because the truth is, in my mind, this is just “that-tropical-drink-I-had-at-a-Kenney-Chesney-concert-and-then-recreated”.  It has no real name and I’m not even 100% sure rum punch is an appropriate one, but I’m thinkin it’s about as good as I can get in the “recognizable name” department.

All that aside, I’m really feeling this drink lately – despite the fact that it’s nothing like what I’d typically order – and I think that’s because it screams summer beach vibes if ever a drink could. I even went out of my way to buy umbrella cocktail picks for the photos because I was that into it. And even though it’s a little sweeter, a little more fruit-forward, and a little tackier (if you will) than what I’d usually go for, I sorta love it. You can somehow manage to cram 3 different tropical flavors – banana (rum), coconut (rum), and pineapple (juice) – PLUS some lemon, lime, and grenadine into one drink, and it just works without being totally over-the-top. They all meld together in this fruity, hint-of-coconut concoction that’ll only make you feel silly for a couple seconds before you take a sip and realize that it tastes pretty damn good. Is it a serious drink? No. Is it a 3+ drinks in one night kind of drink? Definitley not. Is it perfect for some easy summer sipping? Yes yes yessss.

For this recipe, I got a little help from Drizly, a super-cool alcohol delivery website (and app) where you can order alcohol, mixers, and basically anything else you might need for a good cocktail, and have it delivered to your door in less than a hour. They source from local stores so the products and prices are exactly what you’d see on the shelf, expect you don’t even have to leave your house! Last minute party/at-home-happy-hour anyone?! I made this particular cocktail with Malibu Tropical Banana Rum, Blue Chair Bay Coconut Rum, Langers Pineapple Juice, and Finest Call Grenadine, all of which are available in select locations through Grizly. :)

Tropical Rum Punch

  • Yield: 1 cocktail

An extra-tropical take on a fruity summer sipper made with banana and coconut rum, pineapple juice, and a splash of grenadine.

  • 3 ounces pineapple juice*
  • 2 ounces banana rum
  • 1 ounce coconut rum
  • splash (or two) grenadine
  • 1/2 lemon, squeezed
  • 1/4 lime, squeezed
  • 4 ounces club soda

  1. Combine the pineapple juice, banana rum, coconut rum, grenadine, lemon juice, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well.
  2. Strain into a highball or collins glass and top with club soda.

*Orange juice also works well in a pinch!

Optionally, just mix the initial ingredients together, top with soda, and serve on ice.
